Hello All! what is the purpose of this layer on piston skirt?
Hello @AngelikiK ! I believe you’re referring to the bronze bands on the piston skirt. These bands typically protrude from the piston skirt and rub / make contact with the cylinder liner walls as the piston crown expands due to heat. Because bronze is softer than cast iron, it minimizes adhesive wear on the cylinder liner. The latest trend in MAN ES main engines is to replace the bronze bands on the skirt with a barrel-shaped piston skirts coated with molybdenum.
