SUS316 is generally considered to be more suitable for marine applications compared to SUS304.
This is because SUS316 has a higher resistance to corrosion and pitting in chloride environments, which are commonly found in marine environments due to exposure to saltwater.
The main advantage of SUS316 is that it has a higher nickel and molybdenum content compared to SUS304, which further improves its corrosion resistance.
The impact of salt and chlorides on stainless steel alloys, including SUS304, can be significant. The corrosive nature of salt can lead to the erosion of the protective oxide layer of SUS304, resulting in rust. Additionally, SUS304 is more susceptible to pitting due to exposure to salt and chlorides.
For the above reasons, SUS316 is often used in the construction of equipment exposed to the marine environment such as valves, piping, fittings etc.
