Hello. Does anyone have info on how to calculate the attained GFI?
Hello Iro,
It is very similar to FuelEU GHGI attained calculation.
Suppose for a specific vessel (or vessels) and a specific period you have a fuel consumed “mix”.
Lets suppose for example three grades: VLSFOhighvisc, VLSFOlowvisc and LSMGO.
You need to know the LCV and the Ei (GHG intensity) for those grades. Regular fossil fuels LCV and Ei are given and should be taken as standard values (MEPC.391(81)). If any alternative fuel would be in use then these values would become uncertain (within a range though, so GFI could be estimated) and depend on certification that the fuel supplier will provide.
So for each fuel:
step 1 - fuel mass times LCV gives you energy
step 2 - energy times Ei gives you emissions mass
step 3 - next one is a division. the sum of the emissions mass for each fuel grade should be divided by the sum of the energy of each fuel grade. This is the weighted average of the GHG intensity across fuel comsumed This is the GFI attained.

Attached is an elementary excel table for calculations for reference. May contain errors so please be careful. Blue cells for input. GFIattained is the value shown in C20.
Refer of course to “DRAFT AMENDMENTS TO MARPOL ANNEX VI ON THE IMO NET-ZERO FRAMEWORK” for exact guidance.
Thank you Nico! I realise now that my question was very generic. My main issue is the EIj calculation and reference regarding this.
