Is the selection of drydock area a responsibility of Technical or Chartering department?
The selection of the drydocking area is linked with the commercial activity of the vessel. Normally the technical department would inform chartering / operations departments about the due date and then the chartering department would adjust the vessel’s trading activity accordingly. However, there are cases where early drydocking is preferred (even 1 year before the due date) if the location is convenient and the freight rates are low. So, I would say that the chartering/operations departments are the main driving forces behind this decision and that the technical department is there to support and find the most efficient solution.
