LNG fuelled engines methane slip - The FUMES project

It appears that the pressure to regulate the methane slip increases…

Exhaust emissions from 18 ships equipped with low-pressure, dual-fuel four-stroke engines showed an average methane emission rate of 6.4%. This figure significantly exceeds the assumed rates of 3.1% by EU regulations and 3.5% by the International Maritime Organization. The International Council on Clean Transportation, based in Washington DC, has suggested that these regulatory bodies should revise their default methane slip values for these engines to a minimum of 6%. This recommendation comes from the ICCT’s study, which is a segment of their two-year FUMES project. The study involved using drones and helicopters to gather data on the exhaust emissions of LNG-operated ships in Europe and Australia during 2022.
