Fighting fires in new energy carriers on deck

Hello Queseanians,

Decarbonization is significantly impacting various industries, making alternative fuel vehicles increasingly appealing. This raises the question of how to manage fires in such vehicles, particularly those powered by gas or batteries, within roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) spaces. The automotive industry is transitioning towards new energy sources like biogas, hydrogen, and batteries.

There are several types of ships designed to transport vehicles, commonly referred to as ro-ro ships, where vehicles can be easily loaded and unloaded. These include ro-ro passenger (ro-pax) ships that carry both vehicles and passengers, vehicle-only carriers often known as Pure Car Carrier (PCC) or Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC), and smaller road traffic ferries.

This study includes simulations of electric vehicle fires within a ro-ro space, utilizing actual fire data for input and provides recommendations are given about how ro-ro space fires in alternative fuel vehicles, or
indeed any vehicle fire, can be managed.
