The definition of safety critical equipment and critical spares within the SMS of a ship management company has to be robust so as to reduce the chances of “single point failure” with catastrophic sequences for the ship.
In this document, applicable for every ship type, not only for tankers, OCIMF proposes a proactive risk based approach for the definition and carriage of critical spares. In some cases this approach has to be over and above the regulatory requirements.
