What are the methods most commonly used for non-destructive testing (NDT) and what we should take into account while the testing?
The most common NDT methods for checking the quality of steel welds in the shipbuilding industry are the following.
- Visual testing
- Liquid penetrant testing
- Magnetic particle testing
- Radiographic testing
- Ultrasonic testing
The extent and type of NDT depends on the criticality of the location and the agreement between the client (shipowner’s representative), the yard and the classification society.
The Korean shipyards usually submit an NDT plan to their clients and the classification society during the plan approval stage.

I would like to add that Vacuum testing remains a very practical and easy method for the confirmation of welding seams watertight integrity.
