Sensors for vessel performance

What are the sensors that are installed onboard a vessel for the performance monitoring?

Hello Iro,

In the majority of cases, installing the following sensors is adequate for accurately monitoring a vessel’s performance:

  1. A torque meter at the propeller shaft to measure shaft power.
  2. Coriolis-type mass flowmeters for measuring accurately the fuel oil consumption in propulsion engines, generators, and boilers.
  3. A speed log for measuring speed through water (standard installation as per SOLAS).

Next, an electronic interface should be implemented to collect and transmit in real time the gathered data in a meaningful format to the head office for further evaluation (telemetry).

Hello! Speed over ground would not be more accurate for evaluating m/e performance instead of speed through water?

Speed over ground is influenced by currents, so you would have to do the necessary corrections, which are not always straightforward due to the complex nature of currents. Speed through water is not influenced by current effects; therefore, it is more convenient and accurate to use it for evaluating ship performance.
